Bollywood’s “Khiladi Kumar,” Akshay Kumar, is back in theatres with his latest movie, “Selfie.” Emraan Hashmi is another star of the movie. The director of the movie, Raj Mehta, previously worked with Akshay Kumar on a picture titled “Good News.” Emraan Hashmi is also among them this time.
Given that the movie is also a Hindi version of the Malayalam film “Driving License,” it is difficult to predict how long it will run. Thus, it might not be in the same condition as “Shehzada,” the Hindi adaptation of “Ala Vaikunthapuramlo.” Nonetheless, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi have a sizable fan base. Let’s see how this movie is, then.
Story
Film hero Vijay Kumar (Akshay Kumar) is a huge fan of RTO Inspector Omprakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi). To film one of his films in Bhopal, where Omprakash resides, Vijay Kumar travelled here. Vijay Kumar needs to provide a copy of his driver’s license in order to obtain permission for the film’s production, but he discovers at the last minute that it has been lost.
Omprakash, who is a huge fan of Vijay, assists him in obtaining the license quickly. When Vijay sees the media at the RTO office where he is going to collect his license, he becomes enraged and abuses Omprakash in front of his kid.
Cast Performances
Superstar Akshay Kumar Vijay Kumar is excellent in this humorous part. With his comedic timing, the actor delights the audience and demonstrates why he gels best with Raj Mehta. This one is a welcome diversion from all the drama-heavy parts that Akshay Kumar has been doing of late.
Emraan Hashmi finds it difficult to live up to his role as Akshay Kumar’s arch-enemy, the police officer. Even though Emraan Hashmi is always trying to dazzle the public with his new persona, his mediocre acting falls short of expectations.
Diana Penty and Nushratt Bharuccha are largely unimportant in the movie, but Meghna Malik steals the show with her comedic timing, particularly when she interacts with Akshay Kumar. Kusha Kapila, a popular figure on social media, makes a memorable cameo appearance in the movie and shines.
Direction
Raj Mehta is one of those Bollywood filmmakers who makes people smile and captures their hearts with tiny moments. However, it doesn’t appear like his wizardry is working this time. You’ll frequently notice during the movie that the direction isn’t very tight. You won’t discover much new in the movie if you’ve already seen the trailer. In general, Raj Mehta’s direction was not as good as it was in his earlier works.
Verdict
Selfie is merely one more attempt by the Hindi film industry to outperform a popular South Indian movie. Apart from the amazing song “Kudiyee Ni Teri” featuring Mrunal Thakur, there is nothing new that the Akshay Kumar film gives to those who have seen the original. Perhaps you could wait until Selfiee becomes available on OTT, or you could just watch Selfiee once as another mediocre remake from Bollywood’s Pandora box.
